Mr Roland Hettige
Consultant Rhinologist & ENT Surgeon
What is a Rhinologist?
It is a surgeon who specialises on operating on the nose, both outside (Rhinoplasty) and inside (sinuses, nasal allergy & the nasal airway.)
Mr Hettige is a fully trained doctor who is also a generally trained Ear, Nose & Throat surgeon, able to manage a whole range of other conditions and ENT emergencies.
Mr Hettige has spent the last 10 years gaining super-specialist training in advanced nasal and sinus surgery both in London and Oxford. He relocated to take up his NHS Consultant job at Wexham Park Hospital and is the lead surgeon in the trust responsible for the Rhinology service. He routinely accepts referrals from other surgeons to perform difficult and revision surgery, and his unique skills and experience now attract referrals throughout Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and the London boroughs.
Why did Mr Hettige choose to specialise in noses?
"The chance to combine the highly technical skills of a surgeon, the in-depth knowledge of anatomy and the eye of an artist to create a beautiful and functional nose was always a challenge I enjoyed taking on and soon found out I was good at it. Each case is uniquely different and I enjoy the personal touch of really getting to know my patients so we can work together to get the right outcomes from surgery."
Why do you perform Sinus Surgery as well as Rhinoplasty?
Sinus surgery is something that many surgeons perform, but the modern scientific evidence strongly suggests that if the first surgery is performed correctly by a specialist, then the long-term outcomes are better and the need for subsequent revision surgery becomes less.
Surgery is also only part of the process, and ensuring patients get the best long-term outcomes also requires careful follow-up with the latest evidence-based medical care.
